1. Interactive Whiteboard Warm-ups

Game 1 · All Year Levels

🖥️ Morning Anagram Sprint

Project 5 scrambled spelling words onto the Interactive Whiteboard using Unscramble AU Teacher Mode. Students have 3 minutes to solve all 5 words on mini-whiteboards before the teacher hits Reveal.

Game 2 · Foundation – Year 2

🔒 Easy Mode Letter Anchors

Enable Easy Mode in Teacher Mode (which keeps the first and last letters fixed, e.g. C _ _ T). Early readers take turns filling in the middle vowel team or blend!

Game 3 · Year 3 – Year 6

🧩 Printable Word Search Challenge

Use our new Printable Word Search Generator to print a 12x12 word search handout for spelling rotations. The first student to find all words wins a house point.

2. Phonics & Spelling Rule Challenges

Game 4 · Year 2 – Year 4

Select the -ight or -ough Phonics Preset in Teacher Mode. Challenge students to identify the root word and write 3 rhyming words on paper.

Give students a root verb (e.g. ACT or MOVE) and ask them to unscramble the noun form using the correct Australian Curriculum suffix rules.

3. Independent Work & Warm-Ups

Game 6 · Year 1 – Year 3

📖 Oxford Top 100 Speed Read

Load the Oxford Top 100 Words preset list in Teacher Mode with Show Definitions switched on. Students race to solve each sight word and read its definition aloud before the timer runs out — great for building word automaticity.

Game 7 · Foundation – Year 1

🔡 Two-Letter Word Warm-Up

Load the High-Frequency Scrabble (2–3 letter) preset as a two-minute lesson starter. Your youngest learners rebuild tiny words on mini-whiteboards before the main lesson begins.

Toggle Show Definitions on and set students an independent task: unscramble each word, then write its definition in their own words. Ideal for silent reading time or early finishers.

Game 9 · All Year Levels

Click Print PDF Worksheet after generating a word search from any curriculum list to send home a ready-made spelling revision sheet — no photocopier queue required.

Tips for Running Word Games in the Classroom

  • Keep rounds short. Three to five minutes is enough for a warm-up, and it leaves time for the main lesson.
  • Mix the levels. Give younger or less confident students a shorter word or the Easy Mode setting, which keeps the first and last letters fixed. Extend able students by asking for a definition or a sentence.
  • Work in pairs. Talking through which letters go together is often more valuable than the answer itself.
  • Connect to spelling lists. Load the week's spelling words as a custom list, so the game reinforces what you are already teaching.
  • Watch for guessing. If students are randomly shuffling letters, prompt them to look for common blends and endings first.

A Note on Word Choices

Unscramble AU uses a word list built for Scrabble, which includes many uncommon words. For classroom games, choose your own list of words appropriate to the year level, rather than accepting every word the tool can build. The curriculum-based preset lists in Teacher Mode are a good starting point.
