The Complete Guide to 2-Letter Words for Australian Scrabble (CSW24)
Memorising the 127 official 2-letter words in Collins Scrabble Words (often still called SOWPODS) is the fastest single way to boost your tournament score and master parallel plays.
๐ก Did You Know? Australian Scrabble tournaments use Collins Scrabble Words (currently CSW24), which contains 127 valid 2-letter words โ significantly more than the North American NASPA Word List (107 words)!
1. The High-Value Tile Powerhouse (J, K, Q, X, Z)
High-value tiles are hard to play in long words, but 2-letter words let you dump them onto Double or Triple Letter squares for massive 20โ40 point scores on a single tile:
Pro Tip: QI is your savior when holding a Q without a U. ZA (slang for pizza), ZO (a yak-cattle hybrid) and ZE (a gender-neutral pronoun) all score 11 points โ the same as QI โ and are the best ways to dump a Z. XI (the 14th letter of the Greek alphabet) lets you offload an X for 9 points, and OK quietly scores the same 6 points as KA, KI and KO.
2. Vowel-Heavy Dumps (Fixing Heavy Vowel Racks)
If your tile rack is overflowing with vowels (e.g. A, E, I, O, U), use these 2-letter vowel combos to balance your rack without sacrificing a turn:
3. Consonant-Heavy Connectors
When you have awkward consonants or interjections, these short consonant words keep your turn moving. Some, such as CH, exist only in Collins:
4. Complete 2-Letter Word Cheat Sheet (A-Z)
Here is the complete alphabetical list of all 127 valid two-letter words from Collins Scrabble Words (CSW24), the word list used in Australia:
AA, AB, AD, AE, AG, AH, AI, AL, AM, AN, AR, AS, AT, AW, AX, AY, BA, BE, BI, BO, BY, CH, DA, DE, DI, DO, EA, ED, EE, EF, EH, EL, EM, EN, ER, ES, ET, EW, EX, FA, FE, FY, GI, GO, GU, HA, HE, HI, HM, HO, ID, IF, IN, IO, IS, IT, JA, JO, KA, KI, KO, KY, LA, LI, LO, MA, ME, MI, MM, MO, MU, MY, NA, NE, NO, NU, NY, OB, OD, OE, OF, OH, OI, OK, OM, ON, OO, OP, OR, OS, OU, OW, OX, OY, PA, PE, PI, PO, QI, RE, SH, SI, SO, ST, TA, TE, TI, TO, UG, UH, UM, UN, UP, UR, US, UT, WE, WO, XI, XU, YA, YE, YO, YU, ZA, ZE, ZO
Two-Letter Words by the Numbers
Two-letter words are useful partly because they stretch into three-letter words. We checked all 124 two-letter words in the Unscramble AU word list and counted how many letters can be added to the front (a front hook) or the back (a back hook) to make a valid three-letter word. The ten words with the most hooks are:
| Word | Front hooks | Back hooks | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| AR | BCEFGJLMOPSTVWY | BCDEFKMSTY | 25 |
| HO | MOPRTWZ | ABCDEGHIMNOPSTWXY | 24 |
| RE | AEIOPU | BCDEFGHIMNOPSTVWXZ | 24 |
| AN | BCDEFGHMNPRSTVW | ADEINTY | 22 |
| TA | EIU | BDEGIJKMNOPRSTUVWXY | 22 |
| YE | ABDEHKLNOPRSTW | AHNPSTWX | 22 |
| AG | BCDFGHJLMNRSTVWYZ | AEOS | 21 |
| AS | ABDEFGHKLMNPRTVWZ | HKPS | 21 |
| OO | BCDGHLMNPRTWZ | FHMNPRST | 21 |
| OR | BCDFGJKLMNOTV | ABCDEFST | 21 |
The words with the most hooks are the most flexible, because they combine with the most other letters and open up the most parallel plays. At the other end, 2 of the 124 words cannot be extended to a three-letter word at all: FY, XU, so nothing can be added to them. That makes them handy when you want to score without opening a new lane for your opponent.
Your total tile points matter too. The highest-scoring two-letter words on tile values alone are QI (11), ZA (11), ZO (11), AX (9), EX (9), JA (9).
A Note on Edition Changes
The cheat sheet above is the current Collins Scrabble Words (CSW24) list of 127 words. The word list that powers the Unscramble AU tool is an earlier edition, and it has 124 two-letter words. The three missing words are EW, OK and ZE, so the tool will not accept them even though they are valid in the current list. If you rely on them in a game, check against the current official word list. For more on how editions differ, see our guide to Collins Scrabble Words and NWL.
5. Parallel Play: Scoring Multiple Words at Once
The real reason competitive players memorise this list isn't just to dump awkward tiles โ it's to unlock parallel plays, where one move scores several words simultaneously.
Here's a worked example. Suppose HE is already on the board, placed horizontally. You hold the tiles A and T. Instead of playing AT somewhere disconnected, you play it directly below HE, lining up column-by-column:
H E
A T
That single placement scores three words in one turn: your new horizontal word AT, plus two new vertical words formed with the tiles already on the board โ HA (H above A) and ET (E above T). All three are valid words in Collins Scrabble Words, so all three are scored. This is exactly why serious players learn the full 2-letter list: every word on it is a potential vertical or horizontal partner for a parallel play.
6. Common 2-Letter Word Mistakes
- Assuming a word is valid โ or invalid โ because it "sounds right."
OKfeels like an abbreviation but is actually accepted in Collins Scrabble Words, while lookalikes such asPHandMSaren't โ always check the list above (or the tool) rather than guessing. - Forgetting parallel plays form words in both directions. If any letter pairing your play creates isn't itself a valid word, the whole move can be challenged and lost โ double-check every new word your placement forms, not just the main one.
- Playing casually with a different word list. Collins Scrabble Words is the standard for Australian and international tournament play, but many families and apps default to the North American list, which is shorter. Confirm which dictionary your opponents are using before relying on words that exist only in Collins, such as
CH. - Ignoring 2-letter words early in the game. They look low-value, but the board space and parallel-play setups they create are often worth more than the points on the tile.
